Mind Mapping

If you take a look at the Stephen Boley graphic of mind mapping above, you'll get a real nice overview of the concept. First, I'd like you to notice how much it relies on visuals and how little it relies on words.

A mind map is a tool used to link items radially around a central concept. It is an image centered method for connecting portions of information.

By disallowing the use of words them mind map forces you to think in pictures and whole concepts rather than component parts. One interesting model actually visually structures information in opposites.

For example, the image of the goal would be placed in the central location and one side of the map would be devoted to visual representations of things that are diametrically opposed to the accomplishment of that goal. This, of course, is an extremely useful tool for generating the steps which are integral to successful accomplishment on the opposing side of the map.

All in all, mind mapping is an excellent resource for exploring creativity and problem solving.

The key element to remember about mind mapping is that it is about visual concepts, not words.
