The 3 Secrets of Success

Unfortunately, almost all of them considered success to be a destination or objective that someone else (society) had set for them.
In addition those who made the most progress came to a new realization. They discovered that for them, the satisfaction of fulfillment came as much from building and pursuing a road map or battle plan for their success with measurable goals, than the ultimate achievement of those goals.
If you would like to build a plan of your own you may wish to consider the following strategies.
1. Pick a target. Often the easiest way to do this is to identify someone in the same field you are working on and following their lead. Observe what they are doing and duplicate as much as you can in your own endeavors. Their is no great genius in reinventing a strategy that someone else has already perfected.
2. Find a mentor. The most logical person to solicit as a mentor is the person you have chosen as a target to pursue. Those who are truly successful have no qualms about sharing their skills with you. They would like you to be as successful as they are so that they have someone to play with at the top. Another good source for a model is the retirement community. Many of the greatest innovators of the past 40 years of business are now retired. Although, they may have no desire top continue putting in the long hours it takes to build a successful venture, they would be delighted to be your armchair quarter back by providing you the benefit of their wisdom.
3. Start reeling in your target. I once worked under the command of an Army captain. This man was a ranger and he had a unique way of helping me cut my time for the 2 mile run on the Army physical fitness test we were required to take annually. Captain Lovelace told me to lock my gaze on the man running ahead of me. Then to slowly increase my pace until I reeled him in, or came abreast of him. Then I was to repeat the same procedure with the next man running ahead of me. Now, by definition, this never put my first on the time clock. But, second isn't so bad a place to be either.
The trick is to select the person just ahead of you to reel in. Choosing someone too far ahead set you up for a challenge which is mentally insurmountable.
The same strategy will work in any success. The same caution works as well. That is to say, if you are just starting a business venture you may wish to set your sights on someone who is doing a little better than you rather than the Bill Gates of your field, at least at first.
You may feel these are just mental tricks. They are. But, they are mental tricks which allow you to take insurmountable obstacles and break them down into realistic and achievable goals.

I am going to begin by saying that I truly love your writing.
You seem to have “got” “it” whatever it may be.
Don’t get me wrong, I openly want to learn a lot about humans so I am going to ask about your theories or beliefs.
1. On this step to success I am agreeing with you at fullest at least I did a while ago.
I studied some Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) and there I learned that you can “copy” someone else’s behaviour by observing specifically what the other person is doing etc..etc…
But after a while I just lost it, I thought to myself: yes in some cases maybe you will use this tool.
And in other cases maybe you won’t, or should I say you don’t want to.
In this stage in my life I deeply understood, that if you rely on this too much and make a big deal out of this tool developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder you end up walking in someone else’s footsteps.
Would you rather walk your own path and enjoying the fruits of success given to you when you don’t even expect it, or would you specifically and exactly do as someone else just to achieve “success” or “happiness” I know that I represent this “NLP” to be destructive, but it’s a great tool and I think it’s good to be aware of it but at some level or stage in your life you want to take your own steps and sometimes walk on your own mines.
The other steps are great really. I am just so grateful for being here and for reading this.
Thank you so much for your depth on knowledge. May god give you strength to carry on! Bless your soul/ Robin
Robin, this is in response to your comment. First, thank you for your kind words. It is always a pleasure to know someone is reading my work and a greater pleasure to discover they find enough value in it to explore the concepts and take the time to delve more deeply in to it.
Second, I may have communicated the wrong impression in the “Pick a target” section. What I am proposing is not so much choosing a hero and trying to walk in their footsteps. The idea I am trying to communicate is that of selecting someone who you know that has already achieved some measure of success in the direction you are pursuing. The purpose of selecting this” target” is not as you say “copying” their behavior. The purpose is to set a goal that is not only concrete, but that the success of someone else has proven is attainable.
For this reason I point out in part three, it is better to choose someone who is only slightly more successful than you in your endeavors. One you come on par with them chose the next target that is slightly more successful than you, and so forth and so on.
