Change Your Lens

I'm a firm believer that looking at an issue from another perspective is a high value added practice.

Since I have been reading the work of Rosa Say, I've enjoyed some real perspective insights.

For example, this month Rosa is focusing on the concept "Ho' omau." Here is her definition for the term.

Ho‘omau is the Hawaiian value of perseverance and persistence. To
Ho’omau
is also to continue, and to perpetuate in a way that causes the good
to last. Those who ho‘omau do not give up, and they consider mistakes and
failure temporary conditions from which to learn.
Pronunciation Guide: Ho‘omau
(Hoh-oh-mow).

The themes which she will explore are:
  • Persistence
    Resolve
    Determination
    Confidence
    Tenacity
    Grit
    Resilience
    Constancy
    Endurance
    Perseverance
    Willpower
    Focus
    Drive

The more of Rosa's work I read the more I wonder if my grandmother was part of some lost Hawaiian West Virginia mountain clan.

Elemental Truths is still experiencing technical difficulties. I respectfully request reader patience for a bit longer.

Aloha Reg, thank you for sharing Ho'omau with your readers! This is one of my favorite Hawaiian values in the way it reeks of willpower and resolve, so I'm guessing your grandmother is a force to be reckoned with! (As you are here, my friend; it must run in the family :-)

Hi Rosa,
Grandmother was like the mountain. A great obstacle to navigate around, and at the same time a great protector from outside harm. She had the power to speak into the future, in that she would speak a few words to me the meaning and impact I did not understand until many years later.

Wow Reg, guess what? In the chapter on Ho'omau in my book, Managing with Aloha, there is a sub-heading on page 59 that reads, "Fewer words, more meaning." Hawaii and those West Virginia mountains get closer and closer ... your grandmother would have been referred to as a kupuna, an elder who is very wise.

Reg, I love the glance at other angles. Your post reminds me that when we look at the opposite of a thing, we see that thing even better. Now there is a great blog:-) thanks for the inspiration!

Hello Ellen,
I too am a big fan of reverse engineering. Some of my posts are actually instructions for doing things badly! Thank you for commenting.
