Top Blogging Secrets

There are a few things that the blogs that regularly show up in the Technorati top 100 have in common. All are producing content on a regular basis, have a broad range of topics and are well written in the sense of conventions and structure.

Most are using specially designed or highly modified software to provide their product. The majority offer trackback, commenting and categorization features. They are highly stylized and reflect the persona of the content provided.

Some of the top format providers are Movable Type, Wordpress, TypePad, Blogger, and MySpace. Most of the top dogs offer options to monetize your blog with advertising features. The most popular of the advertising providers is Google Adsense.

Far and away the most popular language for blogs is English. However, Japanese and Chinese are fairly well represented as well.

The most popular topic for blogging is (drum roll) blogging and technology. What a shock. The genres in descending order are:

Technology (blogging included) 21%
General 20%
Politics 19%
Personal 9%
Gossip 8%
News 6%
Other 17%

When you look at layout, the most popular color among the top blogs is white. Yep, plain old, simple white. Grey follows white in popularity but is about half as popular as white. Next comes blue, then pink (yes, pink) then black, the beige and finally green.

What about typeface? Well, since you ask. The most popular typeface is verdana, followed by arial, followed by Georgia, followed by trebuchet, and finally times.

So, (everyone in lockstep now) change your template to Movable Type in English about technology on a nice white background with a Verana typeface. Quckly! Mach Schnell!

You there, Rosa Say. Stop being a successful individual and get in line!
